The Ashton Polo Pony & Horse Breeding at Millamolong

The Ashton polo ponies descend from the pre war strings belonging to the four Ashton brothers who toured England in 1930 and 1937.

The Ashton horses have won most tournaments in Australia over the past 15 years and many of the Ashton horses have gone overseas to be sold to the top players in the international game.

The Ashton's have mounted the famous Heguy brothers when they came to Ellerston in the 1990's and many were selected to play in the 40/40 goal games held at Ellerston and Sydney.

James Ashton's horses are nearly all bred on Millamolong's 10,000 acres and most of them descend from the foundation sire Frazer. Frazer was by the New Zealand sire Rustler who can be traced back through his sire SOBIG to great racing names like Hyperion and Precipitation, just to mention a couple. His dam "Saffron" was bred by Bob Ashton, out of Thistle described by Bob as his best playing pony ever. Frazer has been highly successful for Millamolong producing very quiet good natured individuals who are willing to learn and enjoy the great game of polo.

There are many all time greats on the Ashton pony list, but one of the most exceptional mares would be 'Kate' who was bought by Kerry Packer in the 1990's. She then travelled to America and then onto Argentina where she still plays in the Argentine Open.
